Alabama Contractor License Classifications

To obtain a Contractor License in Alabama you should apply to the Alabama Board for General Contractors. There are 2 main types of licenses you can have:

1. Prime Contractor license. In this case, we have a general contractor who can practice the activities and provide the services listed below.
2. Subcontractor license. In this case, you may choose one of those activities and services.

General Contractor license

As it is defined by the Alabama Board for General Contractors a general contractor is the one who:

• For a fixed price or fee constructs or engages in the construction, alteration, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, remediation, reclamation, or demolition of any building, highway, sewer, structure, site work, grading, paving. Or, project or any improvement in the State of Alabama.

Moreover, the cost of the undertaking job should be fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) or more. The general contractor shall be deemed and held to have engaged in the business of general contracting in the State of Alabama.

• In short, this is the one who for a fixed price or fee exceeding five thousand dollars ($5,000), undertakes to construct, superintend the construction of, repair, or renovate any swimming pool, and anyone who shall engage in the construction, superintending of the construction, repair, or renovation of any swimming pool in the State of Alabama.

Moreover, the cost of the undertaking job should exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000). So, the general contractor shall be deemed and held to have engaged in the business of general contracting in the State of Alabama.

• On the other hand, this is the one who constructs, superintends, or engages in the construction, alteration, maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, remediation, reclamation, or demolition of any building, highway, sewer, structure, site work, grading, paving, or project or any improvement in the State of Alabama.

Moreover, the cost of the undertaking job should be fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) or more.
According to your work experience and abilities, you can apply either for one of the major classifications or sub-classifications.

General Contractor Classifications

Building Construction

Shall include the construction of building structures, including modifications thereof or additions thereto, intended for use for shelter, protection, comfort, or convenience. Building construction shall include the excavation and foundations for buildings and work incidental thereto.

Building Construction under Four Stories (BCU4)

Shall include the construction of building structures, including modifications thereof, that do not exceed three stories in height, and any roof structure or component of such structure does not exceed fifty feet in height, which are intended for use for shelter, protection, comfort, or convenience.

• BCU4 shall include the excavation and foundations for buildings and work incidental thereto for buildings less than three stories in height.
• BCU4 shall include interior non-structural alterations and repairs to existing buildings exceeding three stories in height.

In addition to the above BCU4 shall include the construction of building structures, including modifications thereof exceeding three stories in height on projects but only under the direction and supervision of a General contractor or Construction Manager licensed under Building Construction.

Highways & Streets

That is to say, this license shall include the construction of roads, streets, guardrails, fences, parkways, parking areas, bridges, grading, drainage, and all other types incidental thereto.

Municipal & Utility

That is to say, this license shall include clearing, grubbing, paving, curbs, gutters, walks, alleys, driveways, sewer projects, water projects, gas projects, electric projects, telephone projects and work incidental thereto.

Heavy and Railroad Construction

That is to say, this license shall include the construction of railroads, bridges, foundations, pile driving, cofferdams, tunnels, drainage projects, irrigation projects, hydro-electric development, transmission lines, pipelines, marine construction, runways, and any other work incidental to the above types.

Specialty Construction

To clarify, this is defined as any work in connection with construction, erection, alteration, modifications, or additions requiring special skills and/or trades or crafts for any particular part of the work, and work incidental thereto.

The sub-classifications of the Alabama Contractor License Classifications

Sitework Contractor license

In this case, the contractor provides solutions like earthwork fencing and others.

Concrete contractor license

In this case, the contractor provides solutions and solves the problems like structural concrete erection, foundations, reinforcing steel, precast and prestressed concrete installation, and others.

Masonry contractor license

That is to say, it covers masonry work common to the construction industry including restoration.

Metal contractor license

In this case, the contractor constructs metal buildings including site-work, concrete, masonry, foundations, metal structural framing, insulation, and metal siding and roofing.

Carpentry contractor license

That is to say, it covers framing, finish carpentry, millwork, and other carpentry.

Moisture protection contractor license

That is to say, it covers activities and solutions connected with the roofing and sheet metal, sheet metal and metal siding, metal building erection, insulation, exterior insulation, and finish systems sprayed-on fireproofing, joint sealers, and others.

Doors, windows, and glass contractor license

In this case, the contractor selects, cuts, assembles, and/or installs all makes and kinds of glass, glasswork, mirrored glass, and glass substitute materials. As well as, constructs and installs glass windows and doors, hardware glazed curtain walls, etc.

Finishes contractor license

It covers activities and solutions connected with the painting and wall coverings, special coatings and waterproofing sandblasting, terrazzo, hard tile and stone, carpet and resilient tile, lath and plaster, drywall and metal studs, acoustical treatments and insulation, etc.

Specialty contractor license

In this case, it involves the use of specialized building trades or crafts and other building accessories.

Equipment contractor license

Installs kitchen equipment, theater and stage millwright, etc.

Furnishings contractor license

Covers furniture installation, millwork, and casework, window treatments, auditorium and theater seating bleachers installation, etc.

Special construction contractor license

It covers pre-engineered metal buildings conveying, installs, and repairing elevators and escalators handicap lifts.

Mechanical contractor license

Covers heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems installation and repairing, plumbing, refrigeration, fire protection system, pollution controlling systems installation and repairing, industrial pipework and insulation, boiler and refractory construction maintenance and repair.

Electrical contractor license

This sub-classification has two types of licenses. Each is for the services connected with high voltage and low voltage electricity.

Demolition contractor license

Performs the complete demolition of a structure.

Environmental Contractor License

You may apply for the specialty of Environmental or may request specific sub-classifications such as environmental Remediation Abatement, Reclamation, POL Dispensing System Landfills.

Provides solutions after contamination, or is involved in building projects. Environmental contractors are knowledgeable about sustainable building practices, green construction, and how to clean up a piece of land that is unsafe for construction or use. They could also advise on the prevention of contamination or environmental dangers.
